Egypt is poised to make substantial investments in its healthcare sector, with the government announcing plans to allocate 495.6 billion pounds (approximately $10.4 billion) in the next general budget. Mohamed Maait, the country’s finance minister, revealed that this allocation represents a significant increase of 24.9 percent compared to the funds allocated for the sector in the current fiscal year.
Scheduled to commence in July, the forthcoming fiscal year will witness a concerted effort by the Egyptian government to bolster its healthcare infrastructure and services. The decision to enhance healthcare allocations aligns with the nation’s broader objectives outlined in Egypt’s Vision 2030, which seeks to enhance medical services for its citizens.
In addition to the substantial increase in healthcare spending, the government also plans to elevate allocations for the education sector. A notable increase to 858.3 billion pounds, with an impressive annual growth rate of 45 percent, underscores the government’s commitment to advancing education initiatives.
Scientific research, a cornerstone of national development, is also set to receive a significant boost in funding. Reserves for scientific research are projected to exceed 139.5 billion pounds in the upcoming budget, reflecting an annual growth rate of 40.1 percent.
Minister Maait emphasized that the government's focus extends beyond merely increasing budgetary allocations. Egypt remains steadfast in its efforts to expand healthcare initiatives, ensure the availability of essential medicines and medical aids in hospitals, and enhance support for health insurance programs. Notably, the country aims to accelerate the gradual expansion of comprehensive health insurance coverage, underscoring its commitment to providing accessible healthcare for all citizens.
The recent social package implemented in March further demonstrates the government's commitment to prioritizing the welfare of key professionals. An additional allocation of 15 billion pounds was earmarked for increases in wages for doctors, nurses, teachers, and university faculty members. This allocation included 8.1 billion pounds for teachers in pre-university education, 1.6 billion pounds for faculty members and their assistants at higher education institutions, and 4.5 billion pounds for medical professionals and nursing staff.
Egypt's dedication to strengthening its healthcare sector has been evident in recent engagements with international organizations. In 2022, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi affirmed the nation's commitment to collaboration with the World Health Organization to enhance healthcare services and infrastructure.
