Crafted by the HSE National Telehealth Steering Committee, the 'HSE Telehealth Roadmap 2024-2027: Building Blocks for the Embedding & Expansion of Telehealth' aims to revolutionize healthcare delivery in the Republic of Ireland.
Loretto Grogan, HSE National Chief Nursing and Midwifery Information Officer, expressed appreciation for the strides made in digital advancements, particularly accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic. She emphasized the need to capitalize on this momentum, establishing robust foundations to digitize, connect, and transform services securely. The objective is to enhance outcomes, experiences, and safety for those utilizing the health service.
Grogan highlighted the evident advantages of telehealth, citing examples such as remote video and telephone consultations that can diminish travel time, costs, emissions, and time away from work or family. Telehealth's potential extends to supporting timely interventions, curbing hospital admissions, and facilitating early discharge through wearable technologies monitored remotely by healthcare teams.
The Telehealth Roadmap represents a strategic and cohesive plan for the efficient, sustainable, and safe development of telehealth in Ireland. It identifies crucial building blocks to establish a solid foundation for the national expansion of HSE telehealth services.
The overarching goal of the roadmap is to ensure that the ongoing development of telehealth services by HSE is safe, effective, efficient, scalable, sustainable, and interoperable. It seeks to empower and enhance the quality of life for patients, primarily by expanding access to remote video and phone consultations, thus reducing the necessity for in-person appointments.
Furthermore, the roadmap incorporates innovative technologies enabling clinical teams to closely monitor patients' conditions in their homes, thereby minimizing hospital stays. Online supports and therapies from trusted healthcare providers and partner agencies, accessible from the patient's residence, are integral components of the roadmap.
